Stories of In(TER)dependence
Live from the Stacks is our own conversation series, recorded live among the shelves at Native Books in Honolulu. We gather artists, storytellers, and cultural stewards to reflect on independence as a living practice, not a fixed destination. We talk as much about interdependence as sovereignty, and about how art and creativity shape a community.
The first gathering, Kūʻokoʻa as Practice, was held on Lā Kūʻokoʻa — Hawaiian Independence Day — in November 2025, and asked how story and sovereignty meet, on the shelf, in the studio, and at home. The second was held on January 17, 2026, the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, carrying the same theme into a heavier moment: marking that loss, rooting into community and interdependence matters all the more.
