Hūlili Journal. Special Edition Vo.11 No.1

This project combined designing the publication’s graphic layout with creating original illustrations for the cover and the internal content for the 2019 Special Edition of the Hūlili Journal. Co-edited by Dr. Erin Kahunawai Wright, Assistant Professor in the College of Education Department of Educational Administration (EDEA), and Dr. Noelani Goodyear-Kaʻōpua, Chair of the Department of Political Science, this special issue marks the first time Kamehameha Publishing allowed guest editors for Hūlili. The issue's title is "No Ka Pono o ka Lāhui" (for the good of the nation).

Design Elements

From the table of contents to the chapter numbering and related icon development, Salted Logic used shapes, original illustrations, and cultural symbolism to highlight chapter themes, transitions and progression of ideas, and numbering.

For example, ring or circle shape variations created the chapter numbering icons. In chapter one, the ring appears solid; in chapter two, it is divided in half, and in the following chapters, this pattern of division continues.

There is also an illustration that appears right before the last essay in each chapter. The complexity of the drawing increases as the chapters progress.

Chapter Illustrations

The Chapter divider illustrations appear below in order. Each image symbolizes the theme of the chapter. To view the Table of Contents and chapter three pages as they appear in the publication, scroll up to the previous section.

  • Chapter 1: Aloha ʻĀina (Cosmologies)

  • Chapter 2: Kānāwai (Law)

  • Chapter 3: Muliwai (Futures)
